trying not to be a prick

moons and planets and stability

as i went outside to the dark morning to drink my coffee and read my book in the cold winter air, i noticed a bright light in the distance. it took me a moment to register it was the moon.

not so long ago, my (then) girlfriend and i went to a small island not far from town to watch the sunset. as we were walking back along the salt lake, we saw a light in the distance. i thought it was a truck, the girlfriend thought it was a fire.

it took us a full five minutes to realise the moon was rising at the same time as the sun was setting.

we raced home, took some beers, snacks and chairs, then spent the next couple of hours back on the island, enjoying the easterly and westerly views.

of course, the island was thereafter known as Moon Island, and we went often to enjoy the strange lack of flies and uninterrupted sunsets.

over the course of those evenings, we got to know the brightest planets and stars as they winked into existence, one by one.

looking at the moon in the morning, and recalling the routine of moon island visits and love and the lights of venus and jupiter, i appreciate steadiness in my life - the unwavering pins of the planets and the uniform light of the moon.

i don't know, i feel like if life can be stable, then i don't always have to try to be.
